The Workhouse

The Workhouse at Southwell in Nottinghamshire was built in 1824 and was a prototype for the many 19th Century workhouses still to be built. It has been described as the best preserved workhouse in the country and is now in the care of the National Trust. The building was still in use until the early 1990s, providing temporary accommodation for mothers and children. Restoration work has been undertaken and many of the rooms have now been re-decorated as they would have looked in the early 19th century. I was able to visit the workhouse whilst in the area to do some club talks…and would love to go back when occasion permits.
